Here is another "non sequitur" gwyn.

In the first year after my wife died I would go bed every night at days end, and the last thing I would do before dropping off to sleep was to ask her to 'come visit me in my dreams'. It never happened, possibly because I mostly don't have dreams or nightmares due to to the amount of cannabis I consume on a daily basis.
Two nights ago something came to pass. About 4 am on Wednesday morning I sensed and saw her next to me in the bed while I was sleeping. She was naked and very close to me, but couldn't feel her body. I was dumbstruck - waking up in the dream and seeing her, but she wasn't saying anything either.
She was not as thin or pale as she was when she died, but still she looked vulnerable and sad. I reached out with my first instinct and put my arms around her. Even though she was next to me in my dream she seemed so far away.
Next second I was wide awake and needed to take a piss. I was a little shaken, but I went and peed, hurried back to bed and returned to sleep, just in case ...
Woke up at 5.30 am and got up to face the day ahead. Found myself haunted by the only brief moments of the dream I remember and wondering what I had missed when I was in the deep, deep sleep I always experience.
I was kinda shaken; but strangely together, wondering what it all meant, searching calmly for more meaning from the moment.
I pondered and pondered, deeper meaning eluded me for a while. I so wanted our dream encounter to have great significance.
It came to me late in the morning, after a truly demanding quotidian (which I met with brief panic, before getting my shit together and rolling into action).
After her lungs collapsed and she stopped breathing my wife was rushed to ICU, revived and put on a ventilator. She had so many tubes in her and so many machines surrounding her I couldn't hold her, and I never ever wanted to hold her in my arms and lie next to her as much as I did right then, especially when she first opened her eyes and looked at me, after about a week. She could see me and hear me but not speak; although she could mouth some words - until only her eyes could speak.

That's all the dream meant, it was replicating the stuff that goes through my head consciously or unconsciously most days.
On the other hand. When the scale of quotidian threatened to overwhelm my carefully ordered little world, I left a panicked voice message on my friend El's phone that, among other things more important, I might not be able to pick up the four cannabis edibles she wanted me to get for her from the weed shop.
Deep down, though, I must have been hearing Sonja's voice telling me I didn't need to ask anybody for help when I was more than capable of taking care of the problems on my own, and when I swung into action everything fell into place.
So maybe there was a deeper meaning to my dream after all. Sonja's Rules For Life.

PS. Forgive the wall of words gwynn. My late partner was a sports sub editor on a newspaper for most of her working life, and she was gifted and skilled at the art of editing. The greatest of the many gifts she gave me might well have been her editing of my column and my writing out of the newsroom. I had all the passion and knowledge the writing needed, but I was never good at giving up words easily, could get overly descriptive and had never been to university. Nothing of importance, or my ideas, would be lost in her edit. In fact these things would be brought front and center and her work made my thoughts and writing glow, on the page. As you've just found out, the best editor I ever had is gone.

LOL. I'm slightly stoned, but the second day of the 5-day one off World Championship Cricket Test between South Africa and Australia at Lords in London starts in about 15 minutes and I'm pumped. The two hour morning session is going be a humdinger. SA are under serious pressure with four wickets down and few runs on the board; will they stand tall or fall hard?
